StG's Building for the Future
The Church of England has set the goal for Churches across our Diocese
to be CO2 neutral by 2030. We at St George's are changing our heating system!
Our current gas use costs us € 10.000 a year. To play our part in reducing fossil fuel emissions, we need radically to reduce our dependency on gas. Energy experts say we need to heat the people in church not the air. They recommend heated pew cushions rather than warm radiators. The good news is that we are nearly there!
So far we have raised € 42.000 towards
electric heated pew cushions.
The running cost of heating the people with heated pew cushions
is only a few euros a Sunday.
Please join us to raise € 20.000 by November to put the system in this year.
Can you help us? Can you donate? Or help with fund raising?
Our StG Account for Eco-heating donations:
KD Bank
DE78 3506 0190 1566 9230 21.
We issue tax receipts.
We are asking all our members and friends
to join us please in making our Church fit for the coming generation.
Thank you very much!

StG 2025 Autumn Parish Retreat
Time to register
The theme of this year's parish retreat, led by Fr Christopher together with Ms Vania Kent, will be: 'Explore Other Ways to Pray: Centring Prayer and Bibliodrama'.
Dates: Friday 26 September (from 16:00) until Sunday 28 September
(after lunch, at 14:00).
Location: Following the good experiences we have had in past years at the centre in Blankensee, we have reserved 15 rooms there again.
Costs: Room and board in double rooms for 2 days and nights per person is €110. We can try to arrange for a few people to have single occupancy, for an additional €20. There are reduced rates for students and children. Bedsheets can be paid for onsite for €10
(or bring your own).
Theme: We will use Centring Prayer and Bibliodrama to enrich our praying. Vania has been practicing Centring Prayer for over 20 years, drawing deeply from the Christian contemplative tradition. She is currently pursuing a doctorate at the University of Mainz, where her research focuses on 13th-century female mystics. In addition to her academic work, Vania serves as a spiritual director, accompanying others as they seek to discern God's call in their lives. She is passionate about walking alongside people as they open themselves to a more profound encounter with the Divine. Vania worships with the Anglican/Episcopal community of St Augustine's in Wiesbaden.

We are delighted to invite you all to join us, along with our esteemed ecumenical sisters and brothers and representatives of the City of Berlin, for a Solemn Choral Evensong that Bishop Robert will be presiding in the evening. 75th Anniversary
of St George's Church
Neu-Westend and
140 Years of Anglican Worship
in Berlin
The first location of Anglican worship in Berlin was an chapel situated within the hall of the North Gatehouse of Monbijou Palace (which was destroyed during the Second World War). Its opening took place on Whit Sunday in 1855. In 1855, the Princess Royal, Princess Victoria (who would later become Queen of Prussia and German Empress), the eldest daughter of the British Queen Victoria, married Friedrich, the German Crown Prince (who was later crowned Friedrich III., King of Prussia and German Emperor).
Princess Victoria worshipped in the English Chapel until 1885 when, as a Silver Wedding gift, St George's Church was presented to her, by her husband.
The original location was at Oranienburger Strasse (now Monbijou Park). Services were held there from its consecration on 21 November 1885 until 1939,
with a brief interlude during the WW1.
In May 1944, St George’s Church suffered severe damage in an Allied bombing raid.
After the war from 15 July 1945 services were held at various places. It was from this time that St George's came under the responsibility of the Military Chaplain General. •
The foundation stone for the present St George's Church (Berlin Neu-Westend) was laid
on 3 May 1950. It was dedicated by the Rt. Reverend George Ingle, Bishop of Fulham,
on 9 December 1950. On 20 December 1953 the then Governing Mayor of Berlin, Dr. Walther Schreiber, handed over to the Bishop of Fulham, representing the Bishop of London,
a contract granting the British Community in Berlin
the use of St George's Church for a period of 100 years.
On 14 August 1994, St George's Anglican Church returned to the Church of England's Diocese in Europe. The Reverend John Turner became the f irst 'non-military' priest since 1945.
He arrived at the beginning of August and his inauguration was on 14 August 1994.
Following the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 and the subsequent reunification of the German states in 1990, the congregation has seen consistent growth.
The membership of the international English-speaking congregation now includes individuals from a variety of backgrounds, not limited to British nationals.
The St George's is a welcoming place for Anglicans, all Christians and those seeking to embrace the Christian faith. After the sudden death of John Turner on 27 December 1996, The Reverend Canon Christopher Jage-Bowler became his successor.
We are using our celebrations to raise € 100,000
for a new eco heating system.

Pick up Litter Saturday?
Everyone can make a difference! Join our monthly Pick up Litter Saturday. It has been shown that streets strewn with litter have an impact on people’s mental health. So, on the first Saturday of each month we encourage everyone to go out for an hour (or even half an hour) with a bag and pick up litter wherever you happen to be. Make each first Saturday in the month Pick up Litter Saturday!
How will the new Archbishop of Canterbury be chosen?
The appointment of the Archbishop of Canterbury is a deeply significant process of discernment within the Church of England, overseen by the Crown Nominations Commission (CNC). This commission works prayerfully and collaboratively to discern and nominate the next spiritual leader of the Anglican Communion.
It is because of your support that we exist.
As St George's Anglican Church we take responsibility together for all our building costs, clergy and staff salaries and all running expenses. We want our mission to be properly funded. Because we don't receive any funding from the Church of England or the German state, we kindly request all our members and friends to make a monthly donation! If you give regularly, you can claim this against tax by filling in the pledge form at the back of Church and setting up a Dauerauftrag (standing order) at your bank to IBAN DE03 3506 0190 1566 9230 13 BIC GENODEDIDK KD-Bank eG.
You can also donate via PayPal.
We issue tax receipts for all donations made.
We would be so grateful for any donations of liturgical vestments,
for the clergy and servers, to help us with the wonderful services at Marienkirche.
If you would like to make a donation, please get in touch with our treasurer, Marcela, or Fr Joachim, who will be happy to tell you more.

St George's Choir
The choir sings at the morning service most Sundays but will sing in the evening service once a month. There will be other music in the morning service on that day. We are looking for singers to lead the congregational singing or even sing in a small group at the thriving evening service. New singers for the morning service are of course also always welcome. Please contact Andrew Sims if you are interested.
The details of the forthcoming services can be found here (press left button):
St George's Children's Church
and Teens' Church
Our youth activities meet in two groups:
Children's Church for 5–12 years old. Children under 5 are warmly welcome to join us as long as they are joined by a parent.
Teens' Church – a new group for teenagers. We encourage all children over the age of 12/13 to come and join us for fun and thought-provoking sessions.
There is no Children's Church or Teens' Church during school holidays or on the first Sunday of each month to allow time for children to take part in the full Eucharist service.
Please register for Children's Church and Teen Church: For safeguarding purposes, we are required to register children and teenagers attending Children's Church and Teen Church. We kindly ask parents or carers to fill in the short form available at the back of the church and return it to a member of the clergy or the Church Office. This information will be treated confidentially and kept securely in the Church Office.
St George's Psalm cantors needed
We have relaunched the cantoring of the psalms at the morning service. If you are interested in serving as a cantor, please contact Andrew Sims at choir@stgeorgesberlin.de.
